Jan Soumar

Jan Soumar's work explores the deconstruction of the traditional form of figurative painting. Through the deformation and fragmentation of figures and landscapes, he creates new visual planes that question original narratives and respond to the changes brought about by digital culture.

The author paints fragments of figures and landscape elements from memory, which he combines with modernist abstract shapes. This collage creates a space that is not only illusory, but also transformed into an experiential environment. The fragments painted “from memory” repeat certain patterns and point to the subconscious world of the author’s perceptions and memories, which appear in the picture as remnants of a narrative that has been dispersed. In some works, Soumar uses deformations of figures that create irritating contrasts with pure forms. In other works, the composition is dematerialized and creates a new, abstract reality that carries only hints of the original world. The contrast between traditional painting forms and modernist trends, which have already lost their relevance, is strongly reflected in his work.
